Is George Washington University worth the cost compared with UVA for pre-med or general career opportunities?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus location-based access. George Washington gives you daily proximity to D.C. hospitals, research institutes, federal agencies, and policy internships, while UVA usually offers the stronger value because it is a highly respected public university with a lower price for many students. For pre-med especially, taking on significantly more debt rarely pays off, since medical school is expensive and your GPA, MCAT, clinical exposure, and research matter more than paying a premium for a private-school name.

GW does have real advantages. Its urban setting makes it easier to find volunteering, shadowing, public health work, and internships during the school year, and students interested in the overlap between medicine, health policy, and government can use D.C. especially well. If you are very self-directed and know you want to build that kind of profile, GW can create opportunities close to campus.

UVA, though, is not lacking in opportunity. It has a strong national reputation, a major academic medical center, substantial research access, and a large alumni network. For general career outcomes, UVA travels very well across fields, and for pre-med it gives you the core ingredients you need without requiring the same financial stretch in most cases.

That financial piece matters more than many applicants realize. If GW would require meaningfully more borrowing from your family or from you, UVA is usually the smarter decision. The flexibility you keep by saving money can matter later for med school, gap years, unpaid clinical work, or simply reducing pressure to chase the highest-paying job right after college.

GW becomes easier to justify only if the cost gap is manageable and you know you will actively use D.C. in ways that UVA cannot match as easily, especially in health policy, public health, or government-facing work.
