Is George Washington University worth the cost compared with Villanova University for undergrad?

I’m trying to decide between George Washington and Villanova, and the price difference is a big factor for my family. Both seem like strong options, but I’m having trouble figuring out whether the extra cost of one is actually justified by the college experience or outcomes.

I’m mainly wondering how students usually think about value when comparing schools like these.

For most students, George Washington is only worth a noticeably higher price if you plan to take real advantage of being in Washington, DC while you are in college. GW’s biggest value is access: internships during the semester, policy and political connections, museums, embassies, nonprofits, media, and federal agencies are built into the location in a way very few schools can match. If your interests are things like politics, international affairs, public health, journalism, or advocacy, that day-to-day access can genuinely change your college experience and resume.

A student who thrives at GW usually wants an urban, independent lifestyle and is excited by a campus that feels woven into a city rather than separated from it. The school is strongest when you are the kind of person who will chase opportunities early, commute to internships between classes, and use DC as part of your education. If that is not you, the extra cost can be hard to justify, because the premium is often tied as much to location as to the classroom experience itself.

Villanova tends to make more sense for students who want a traditional residential undergraduate experience with a close-knit campus community. It is known for a strong business reputation, a cohesive student culture, and an environment that often feels more structured and community-oriented than GW. Students who value school spirit, easier campus social life, and a suburban setting with access to Philadelphia often come away feeling they got a lot for their money.

Value-wise, Villanova is often easier for families to defend if it is meaningfully cheaper, especially for majors where GW’s DC advantages are less central. In that situation, lower debt usually matters more than a marginal prestige difference.

The cleanest way to think about it is this: pay more for GW only if you can name specific opportunities there that would be hard to replicate at Villanova and that directly match your goals. If the appeal is more general, like liking the city or the idea of DC, Villanova is often the smarter value choice.
