Which is more difficult to get into: UNC Chapel Hill or Texas A&M?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UNC Chapel Hill is more selective overall for most applicants, while Texas A&M can feel more predictable for some in-state students because of Texas admissions policies and the way major placement works. UNC’s admissions process is broadly very competitive across the board, especially for out-of-state applicants, since the university keeps that group limited. Texas A&M is also competitive, but the level of difficulty depends much more on whether you are in-state and which major you want.

For a typical applicant asking “which school is harder to get into,” UNC Chapel Hill is usually the tougher admit. That is especially true if you are not from North Carolina. UNC is a flagship with strong national demand, and out-of-state spaces are constrained enough that many well-qualified students do not get in.

Texas A&M is not easy, but it is less uniformly selective in the same way. For Texas residents, admission can be more accessible depending on academic record, though highly sought-after majors like engineering, business, and some science pathways can still be very competitive even after you are admitted to the university. In other words, A&M may be easier to enter than UNC, but harder to land in your first-choice program.

If you are comparing them in the broadest sense, UNC Chapel Hill is the harder school to get into overall. The main exception is that a strong Texas student may find Texas A&M more attainable at the university level, while a student aiming at one of A&M’s most competitive majors could still face a tougher path than the school’s overall admissions reputation suggests.
