Is UNC or Vanderbilt harder to get into overall?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Vanderbilt is more selective overall for almost every applicant, while UNC’s difficulty changes a lot depending on whether you are in-state or out-of-state. For a Tennessee resident applying to Vanderbilt, it is still extremely hard. For a North Carolina resident applying to UNC, the odds are typically much better than Vanderbilt, but for out-of-state applicants UNC can become comparably tough in a different way because the university limits how many nonresidents it enrolls.

As a broad, overall comparison, Vanderbilt is harder to get into than UNC. Vanderbilt has a more uniformly ultra-selective admissions process across the board, and it draws a very large national applicant pool for a relatively small class. UNC is also highly selective, but it is a public flagship with a built-in mission to serve North Carolina students, so its selectivity is not the same for every group of applicants.

That means the answer depends somewhat on who you are. If you are an in-state North Carolina student, UNC is usually meaningfully more attainable than Vanderbilt. If you are out-of-state, UNC can still be very difficult, but Vanderbilt is still typically viewed as the tougher admit overall because of its consistently intense selectivity and national private-school applicant pool.
