Is UNC or Emory harder to get into overall?

Emory is harder to get into than UNC for most applicants. Emory is a private university with a smaller applicant pool to class-size balance and a more uniformly selective national admissions process, while UNC has a major in-state mandate that changes the picture a lot depending on where you live. For North Carolina residents, UNC can be very attainable relative to its reputation; for out-of-state students, UNC becomes much tougher and can feel closer to Emory-level selectivity.

The clearest way to think about it is by applicant type. A North Carolina student with strong grades and solid rigor may find UNC more accessible than Emory because UNC is required to enroll a large share of in-state students. That built-in residency advantage is real and makes UNC’s overall selectivity look different from what an out-of-state applicant experiences.

For an out-of-state student, the comparison gets tighter. UNC offers relatively fewer spots to nonresidents, so even though Emory is typically viewed as the more selective school overall, UNC out of state can be extremely difficult in practice. In other words, Emory is the safer answer to your question overall, but UNC can be just as hard, or harder, for someone applying from outside North Carolina.
