Is UVA or NYU better for internships for undergraduates?

NYU has the edge for undergraduate internships, mainly because of location. Being in New York means students can intern during the school year at companies, startups, media organizations, nonprofits, finance firms, hospitals, and arts institutions without needing to leave campus life behind. That kind of proximity makes part-time internships during fall and spring much more realistic than at UVA.

At NYU, the city is built into how many students gain experience. It is easier to attend employer events, take short commutes to interviews, and keep momentum with semester-long roles that can turn into longer opportunities. For fields like finance, media, entertainment, fashion, tech, public policy, and the arts, NYU students benefit from a very dense internship market right around them.

UVA is still excellent, especially for summer internships and for students targeting consulting, business, public service, policy, or pre-law paths. Its alumni network is very strong, and employers recruit actively from UVA for structured summer roles. But Charlottesville does not offer the same volume of in-semester opportunities nearby, so many UVA students depend more on summer recruiting or internships in other cities.

Another difference is convenience. At NYU, undergrads can build a resume earlier through multiple smaller experiences during the academic year. At UVA, the opportunities are often strong but more tied to formal recruiting cycles, campus connections, or leaving town for the summer. If your priority is maximum day-to-day access to internships while enrolled, NYU is the more advantageous place.
