Is the University of Michigan or Boston University better for finance careers?
I’m trying to decide between the University of Michigan and Boston University for undergrad, and finance is the main career I’m aiming for. I know both schools have good reputations, but I’m not sure which one is stronger for getting into finance jobs after college.
I’m mostly trying to understand which school tends to give students a better path into finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is structure versus location: Michigan has a more established, higher-visibility pipeline into finance through Ross and its alumni network, while Boston University gives you day-to-day access to Boston internships during the school year. For pure recruiting strength, Michigan usually carries more weight. BU can still get students into finance, but the path is often a bit more self-driven and less powered by a single undergraduate business brand.
At Michigan, the Ross School of Business is a major advantage if you are admitted there or can realistically pursue that path. Ross is very well known among finance employers, and Michigan’s alumni base is unusually broad and active in New York, Chicago, and other major markets. Even outside Ross, Michigan students benefit from a campus culture where finance clubs, recruiting prep, and employer presence are highly developed.
BU’s edge is that you are in Boston, which can matter for semester internships, networking events, and local finance exposure while classes are in session. That is especially useful if you are interested in asset management, commercial banking, wealth management, or finance roles tied to Boston’s firms.
One important detail is your exact entry point. Michigan Ross versus BU Questrom is not the same comparison as Michigan LSA economics versus BU Questrom. If you have direct access to Ross, Michigan is the clearer choice for finance careers. If your Michigan option does not include Ross and your BU option is Questrom with strong access to internships, the gap narrows, though Michigan still tends to have the stronger national finance network.
