For film, NYU is usually seen as the stronger option overall. Its film program has a much bigger national reputation, a deeper production infrastructure, and a broader alumni network in filmmaking through Tisch. If your priority is intensive training, more established industry pathways, and being surrounded by a large community of film-focused students, NYU has the clearer edge.

NYU tends to fit the student who already knows they want film to be a central part of college. Tisch’s film and television ecosystem is built around making work, collaborating across specialties, and learning from faculty with industry experience. In New York, that often translates into internships, set experience, and networking opportunities that feel closely tied to the program rather than something you have to piece together on your own.

Fordham makes more sense for a student who wants film in a broader liberal arts setting, or who wants flexibility in case their interests shift toward media, communications, writing, or another field. Fordham can still give you access to New York opportunities, and its location absolutely helps with internships and cultural exposure, but it is not typically regarded as being on the same level as NYU for hands-on film training or film-industry brand recognition.

Another practical difference is the peer environment. At NYU, you are likely to be surrounded by many students who are specifically trying to direct, produce, edit, shoot, and write for film and TV, which can matter a lot because your classmates often become your first collaborators. Fordham may appeal more if you want a campus experience that feels less dominated by pre-professional arts culture and more balanced across disciplines.

So if the question is which school is generally stronger for a serious film student, the answer is NYU. Fordham becomes appealing when you want a more traditional college structure and broader academic flexibility, and film is important but not the only thing driving the decision.
