Fordham or Rutgers for computer science: which is the better choice?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Rutgers usually gives you the deeper, more established computer science environment, while Fordham offers a smaller private-school setting with easier access to professors and the advantages of being in New York City. For CS specifically, Rutgers tends to have broader course offerings, a larger computing community, and a stronger built-in reputation among employers and grad programs in technical fields. Fordham can still work for tech, especially for a student who is proactive, but it is not usually the first name people point to for computer science strength.

On academics, Rutgers has the clearer edge. Its CS program is better known, and the scale of the university usually means more upper-level options, more classmates doing serious technical work, and more research or project pathways tied directly to computing. That matters because in CS, your environment often shapes how much you build, how many technical peers you meet, and how much recruiting activity comes to campus.

For internships, both schools can place students well, but they do it differently. Rutgers benefits from a large alumni base, a strong presence in New Jersey and the broader Northeast, and access to employers in nearby tech, pharma, finance, and enterprise software corridors. Fordham’s location in New York is a real advantage, especially if you are interested in tech roles connected to finance, consulting, media, or business-heavy companies, but location alone does not fully make up for having a less prominent CS program.

In terms of reputation for a solid tech career, Rutgers is the safer bet. In CS, employers care a lot about skills, projects, internships, and interviewing ability, but school reputation within the field still helps, and Rutgers carries more weight there than Fordham. If cost is similar, Rutgers would be the choice I’d lean toward for most students focused on computer science.

Fordham becomes more compelling if you strongly prefer a smaller campus feel, want the private-school experience, and expect to take advantage of New York networking from the start. But on the core question of which school is stronger for CS academics, technical ecosystem, and overall field reputation, Rutgers comes out ahead.
