Fordham or Boston University for journalism: which is the better school choice?

The biggest practical tradeoff is New York City access at Fordham versus the depth and structure of BU’s journalism program. Fordham gives you a great location for internships, media exposure, and reporting opportunities in New York, especially through Lincoln Center, while BU has one of the more established undergraduate journalism environments in the country with a dedicated College of Communication. If you are choosing based on the actual journalism program first, BU has the clearer edge; if you are choosing based on city access and a broader liberal arts setting, Fordham becomes more appealing.

For journalism specifically, BU is usually the stronger academic and preprofessional option. Its journalism offerings are more central to the university’s media training ecosystem, and students benefit from a school where communications, reporting, production, and related fields are all highly visible. That tends to translate into more specialized classes, a stronger professional identity for journalism students, and a wider peer network of students pursuing similar media careers.

Fordham can still work very well, especially if you are proactive. Being in New York matters a lot for reporting, internships, student media, and networking, and Fordham students can take real advantage of that. But Fordham is not as widely known first for journalism in the same way BU is, so more of your outcomes may depend on how aggressively you seek out campus media, internships, and mentors.

For someone aiming at reporting or media and asking which school offers the better overall journalism experience, I would lean Boston University. It combines strong city access with a more developed journalism infrastructure, and that usually matters more over four years than location alone.
