For engineering, the school name does matter, and UC Berkeley’s name carries noticeably more weight for internships, first jobs, and especially research-focused grad school. Berkeley has a long-established reputation with major tech, engineering, and research employers, and it attracts a dense pipeline of recruiters, faculty connections, and ambitious peers. ASU can still absolutely lead to strong outcomes, but it usually asks more of the student to seek out honors opportunities, research, and standout project experience rather than benefiting from immediate brand recognition.

Berkeley makes the most sense for a student who wants access to a very high-powered engineering ecosystem and is comfortable with intensity. In practice, that can mean tougher curves, more competition for some classes or opportunities, and a faster pace, but also easier credibility when applying to selective internships, top labs, and PhD or MS programs.
