Cal State LA’s Television, Film, and Media Studies program can be especially practical for students who intend to work while studying or build local professional contacts early.

For the undergraduate program itself, ASU’s film and media production curriculum is designed around making work, learning production roles, and developing a portfolio, with access to a large arts school and cross-disciplinary collaborators in areas such as performance, design, animation, and digital media. The program’s scale can also mean more course options and a broader creative network, though students need to be proactive about securing projects and relationships.

Cal State LA is a credible choice, particularly for a student focused on the Southern California job market and willing to pursue internships aggressively. Its location is a real advantage, but proximity alone does not create a career; students still need strong reels, reliable set experience, and relationships with classmates and local productions. The campus environment is less centered on a nationally prominent film-school identity than ASU’s newer film-school initiative.

For most undergraduates choosing strictly on program strength and practical preparation, I would lean toward Arizona State. Choose Cal State LA instead only if being in Los Angeles during all four undergraduate years is central to your plan and you are ready to use that location deliberately through internships, freelance crew work, and local filmmaking opportunities.
