Is Harvey Mudd harder to get into than MIT for undergraduate admissions?

MIT is harder to get into than Harvey Mudd for undergraduate admissions. Both are extremely selective STEM-focused schools, but MIT draws a much larger and broader applicant pool from around the world, has even more intense competition in math and science achievement, and is widely viewed as one of the very toughest undergraduate admissions processes in the country.

One big difference is scale and visibility. MIT has global name recognition across engineering, computer science, physics, and entrepreneurship, so it attracts huge numbers of applicants with top academics, research, olympiad-level work, and major extracurricular distinction. Harvey Mudd is also exceptionally selective, but its applicant pool is smaller and more self-selecting because it is a small liberal arts college focused heavily on STEM within the Claremont Colleges.

Another differentiator is institutional size and the way that shapes admissions pressure. MIT enrolls a larger class than Harvey Mudd, but the demand for those seats is still so intense that admission remains tougher overall. Harvey Mudd’s small size makes it very hard to enter too, yet it does not usually carry quite the same across-the-board admissions difficulty as MIT.

Their evaluation styles also create slightly different admissions dynamics. MIT puts a premium on deep quantitative strength, initiative, collaboration, and fit for its hands-on science and engineering culture, often among applicants with extraordinarily high academic metrics. Harvey Mudd also wants students who are academically outstanding and collaborative, but because it is a niche STEM liberal arts environment, the comparison most applicants make at a high level still puts MIT a notch above in raw admissions difficulty.
