Is Harvey Mudd or UCLA harder academically?

Harvey Mudd tends to feel harder academically day to day. Its required core is famously intense, the school is heavily centered on math, science, and engineering, and the pace can be relentless because almost everyone around you is taking similarly demanding technical courses at the same time.

One big difference is the curriculum structure. At Harvey Mudd, even students who already know they want a specific STEM path still go through a broad, rigorous common core across math, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and engineering. That means fewer easy scheduling escapes early on, and many students describe the first years as packed with problem sets, labs, and collaboration-heavy work.

At UCLA, academics can absolutely be challenging, especially in majors like engineering, physics, computer science, and pre-med tracks. But UCLA is a much larger university with more variation across departments, instructors, and course loads, so the experience is less uniformly intense. It is often easier to build some flexibility into your schedule through GE choices, course timing, and the wider range of classes.

The student culture also changes how the workload feels. Harvey Mudd has a strong reputation for shared academic struggle, where hard classes are the norm rather than the exception. UCLA can be demanding too, but because the campus is so broad, you are less likely to feel that every single student is operating inside the same concentrated STEM pressure cooker.

For a strong STEM student, UCLA may still feel very hard in certain quarters, but Harvey Mudd is more likely to feel consistently compressed, technical, and intense across the full undergraduate experience.
