For a career in finance, is Purdue or Columbia the better college choice?

I’m a high school junior trying to decide between Purdue and Columbia for a finance path. I know both schools are strong in different ways, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one would give me a better overall setup for recruiting, networking, and breaking into finance after college.

I’m not looking at one specific major yet, just the school choice for someone who wants to end up in finance.

Columbia is the better choice for a finance career. Its New York City location puts you next to the biggest concentration of investment banks, buy-side firms, and finance internships in the country, and that matters a lot for recruiting access, in-semester internships, and alumni networking.

The biggest differentiator is recruiting access. At Columbia, firms regularly recruit on campus and nearby, students can attend networking events without traveling, and it is much easier to build relationships during the school year. For finance, proximity is not everything, but being in Manhattan creates more chances to meet alumni, do part-time internships, and stay plugged into the industry before junior summer recruiting even ramps up.

The second difference is brand strength within finance circles. Purdue is a respected university with solid business and quantitative pathways, but Columbia carries a level of prestige and familiarity that opens more doors automatically with recruiters, especially in elite finance tracks. That does not guarantee outcomes, but it can make the first screen, the informational interview, and the alumni response rate noticeably easier.

The third factor is the concentration of peers and alumni heading into finance. Columbia has a dense network of students targeting banking, investing, and related jobs, which tends to create better student clubs, interview prep culture, and alumni engagement in those fields. Purdue can absolutely lead to finance, particularly for students who are proactive and may be open to corporate finance, commercial banking, or quantitative roles, but for pure recruiting power, networking density, and access to top finance firms, Columbia gives you the stronger overall platform.
