For grad school prep, is Purdue or McGill the better choice for an undergraduate degree?

Purdue has the edge for grad school prep for most U.S.-bound students, mainly because it offers very strong undergraduate research access, and recommendation letters that will be especially legible to U.S. graduate admissions committees. McGill is absolutely respected and rigorous, but the undergraduate experience there is often larger and more independent, which can make personalized advising and close faculty contact harder to build quickly.

One big differentiator is research access. Purdue is a major research university with a strong culture of involving undergraduates in faculty projects. For grad school, having sustained research with a professor who knows your work well matters more than prestige alone, and Purdue often makes that path clearer.

Another factor is recommendation letters. At McGill, intro and mid-level classes can be quite large, and students often need to be more proactive to stand out and form close relationships with professors. Purdue can also be large, but it typically offers more visible structures for undergrads to connect with faculty, which helps when you need detailed academic letters.

The third difference is where you may apply afterward. If your graduate school plans are mostly in the U.S., Purdue’s grading system, course structure, and faculty network may translate more directly in admissions review. McGill still places students into excellent graduate programs, especially for students who thrive in a more self-directed and academically intense environment, but for cleaner U.S. grad school positioning, Purdue is usually the safer call.

The exception is if you are especially drawn to McGill’s academic style, want an internationally recognized degree, or are confident you will aggressively seek out research and faculty mentorship on your own from the start. In that case, McGill can work very well, but it asks for more initiative earlier.
