Villanova vs George Washington for politics careers: which is better for breaking into government or political work?

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity versus campus structure. George Washington puts you in Washington, D.C., where internships on the Hill, at agencies, nonprofits, think tanks, and advocacy groups are built into the school’s ecosystem, while Villanova gives you a more traditional suburban campus with access to politics through Philadelphia and alumni networks rather than daily immersion in federal politics. If your main goal is breaking into government or political work as early as possible, GW has the clearer advantage because location matters a lot in this field.

At GW, students can realistically intern during the semester without major commuting barriers, and that makes a difference. Being able to work part time in D.C. while taking classes helps students build contacts, references, and practical experience earlier. For politics careers, that accumulated experience often matters as much as coursework.

Villanova can still get you there, especially if you are proactive about summer internships in D.C. and use its alumni network well. It has a respected reputation, strong academics, and good outcomes for students who are organized and intentional. But the path is usually less immediate than at GW, because you are not surrounded by federal institutions every day.

Another factor is the type of college experience you want. Villanova offers a more classic residential campus and school community, while GW feels much more integrated into the city and can be less self-contained.
