Is UT Austin or the University of Washington better for biology majors?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both UT Austin and the University of Washington are on it for biology. I’m interested in a strong undergrad biology program with good research opportunities and a solid path toward grad school or med school.
I know both schools are well known, but I’m having trouble comparing them in a way that matters for a biology student.

One thing to look at closely is major structure and registration. At both schools, large intro science classes are normal, and getting involved early matters.
If your priority is biomedical research and being close to major hospitals and biotech from the start, UW has a real edge. If you want an outstanding biology education with lots of breadth, strong research, and a more traditional flagship-campus experience, UT Austin is an excellent pick. My lean for a biology major, especially one thinking about med school or research, is University of Washington by a small margin because the surrounding research and medical ecosystem is unusually valuable.
