Georgetown’s location also makes informational interviews, evening events, congressional hearings, and part-time roles more accessible alongside classes. For a student focused on federal government and public policy, that day-to-day access is a meaningful advantage.

Georgetown has extensive ties to government agencies, congressional offices, advocacy organizations, think tanks, and international institutions throughout the city. Its public-policy-oriented academic programs and alumni network can help students identify opportunities, but the key benefit is that an internship downtown can be logistically realistic even before junior year.

UT Austin offers a strong, more deliberate route to DC through the Archer Center’s Archer Fellowship Program, which places UT System students in Washington for a semester of coursework and a full-time internship. UT’s LBJ School and Texas-focused political network can also be especially valuable for internships connected to Texas’s congressional delegation, federal agencies, or state-to-federal policy work. Austin itself provides substantial access to Texas government, legislative, and policy internships during the regular year.

For the easiest and most frequent access to Washington internships across all four years, Georgetown is the clearer choice. UT Austin can still lead to excellent DC experience, particularly through Archer, but it requires more planning and is less integrated into everyday campus life.
