Tulane vs George Washington for city life: which college feels more urban day to day?

George Washington feels more urban day to day. Its campus is embedded in downtown Washington, DC in Foggy Bottom, so city blocks, office buildings, restaurants, Metro stops, museums, and internships are part of daily student life rather than something you travel out to reach. At GW, it is very easy to step off campus and immediately feel like you are in the middle of a major city.

One big difference is campus layout. GW does not have the traditional separated-campus feel that Tulane has, because academic buildings, residence halls, shops, and city streets all blend together. Students are walking through a dense DC neighborhood every day, often using the Metro or heading to nearby areas like Dupont Circle, Georgetown, or the National Mall without much planning.

Tulane is in New Orleans, but the student experience is more residential and campus-centered. It sits in Uptown, next to Audubon Park, which is attractive and lively but not as intensely urban in the immediate surroundings as GW’s location. You can absolutely access New Orleans culture, food, and music, but it tends to feel more like you are based in a distinct neighborhood and then venturing into other parts of the city, rather than constantly living inside the city core.

Another everyday factor is transportation and routine. GW students often build the city into their schedules through internships, events, museums, and public transit access, so DC can feel inseparable from college life. At Tulane, city experiences are real and memorable, but they are a little less woven into every ordinary weekday in the same constant way.
