Tulane vs. George Washington University: Which offers a better overall campus experience?

For a student seeking a cohesive, traditional campus community, Tulane offers the stronger overall campus experience. Its Uptown New Orleans campus is a defined, leafy residential setting where students repeatedly run into classmates at dining halls, on the academic quad, and around residence halls. Tulane also has a notably visible school-spirit and social culture, with athletics, Greek life, music, festivals, and New Orleans traditions creating shared events beyond the classroom.

GW feels much more like living in Washington, D.C. than living on a self-contained college campus. The tradeoff is that students’ schedules and social lives can be more dispersed across D.C., and campus can feel less insulated and less unified than Tulane’s.

Tulane’s social scene is concentrated near campus and the nearby Uptown neighborhoods, so it is easier to form a routine with the same group of friends. The city still matters enormously, especially through food, music, and events, but students have a clear home base. At GW, exploring different neighborhoods, attending policy events, and pursuing internships can be central to the experience from the start, often drawing students outward.
