The University of Pittsburgh is closely connected to UPMC, and that matters a lot for biology majors interested in medicine, neuroscience, genetics, microbiology, or lab work with clinical relevance. Being in Pittsburgh also creates a lot of opportunity for shadowing, volunteering, and research that feels tightly linked to pre-med preparation rather than separate from it.

Iowa makes a lot of sense for a student who wants a strong biology foundation with excellent campus resources but may care just as much about a more traditional college-town experience. The University of Iowa has a respected medical and health system too, so pre-med students are not short on opportunities, and its biology department offers solid coursework and research access. Iowa can be especially appealing if you want a large public university where the environment may feel a little more contained and easier to navigate than a city campus.

If the question is purely which school is more often seen as the higher-powered place for biology tied to pre-med or biomedical research, I would lean Pitt. If you are equally interested in quality biology training but also value the broader feel of Iowa City and a Big Ten campus experience, Iowa remains a very credible choice.
