Is Pitt or Tulane better for internships and career opportunities?

For internships and career opportunities, Pitt usually has the clearer edge for students who want frequent, practical access to employers during the school year. Its location in Pittsburgh matters a lot: students are plugged into a major hospital and research ecosystem through UPMC, strong university-linked labs and medical settings, and a city with steady opportunities in healthcare, engineering, tech, business, and public policy. It is often the easier place to build experience semester after semester without needing to leave campus for another city.

Pitt fits the student who wants a large research university with deep local industry connections and a more straightforward path to hands-on work. If you are interested in pre-med, nursing, public health, bioengineering, neuroscience, lab research, or other health-related fields, Pitt is especially compelling because the university’s ties to hospitals and research centers create a lot of nearby openings. Even outside health fields, Pittsburgh gives students access to internships during the academic year in finance, nonprofits, startups, government, and education.

Tulane makes more sense for the student who wants a career path shaped by community engagement, public service, entrepreneurship, hospitality, or the distinct professional culture of New Orleans. Tulane is well known for integrating service and city-based experience into student life, so students who are proactive can build strong local connections. New Orleans can be a real asset for internships in public health, environmental work, law, social policy, arts administration, and tourism-related industries.

The tradeoff is that Tulane’s local job market is more specialized and smaller than Pitt’s in some corporate and technical areas. That does not mean opportunities are weak, but it can require more intentional networking and sometimes more reliance on summer internships outside New Orleans if you want certain fields, especially some corners of finance, engineering, or larger-scale tech.

If internships are your top priority in the broadest sense, especially during the school year, Pitt is the safer bet.
