Pitt vs. Michigan State for pre-med: which is better for preparing for medical school?

I’m trying to decide between Pitt and Michigan State for undergrad and I’m planning to go pre-med. Both schools seem like they could be a good fit, but I keep seeing different opinions about how strong they are for preparing students for med school.

I’m mainly trying to understand which one has the better support for pre-med students in terms of advising, opportunities, and preparation for the application process.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Pitt gives you tighter access to a major academic medical environment right next to campus, while Michigan State offers a very large university system with strong health-related options but a more spread-out pre-med experience. For pre-med specifically, Pitt benefits from being closely connected to UPMC and having extensive hospital, clinical, and research opportunities concentrated in Oakland. Michigan State has real strengths too, especially through its broad health sciences ecosystem and undergraduate research access, but Pitt is often the school students mention first when they want day-to-day proximity to a major medical center.

For advising and application prep, Pitt tends to have the clearer edge. Its pre-health advising structure is well established, and the combination of advising, committee-style support, nearby shadowing, volunteering, and lab access can make it easier to build a coherent med school profile. That matters because one of the hardest parts of pre-med is not just finding opportunities, but finding them consistently without huge travel or administrative friction.

Michigan State is absolutely viable for pre-med, and some students do very well there, especially those who want a big-campus environment with many ways to get involved. It also has strong science departments and meaningful connections to healthcare and research, including through its colleges and affiliated medical settings. But compared with Pitt, the path can feel a little less centered around one dominant hospital system that undergrads can tap into so directly.

Another practical point is course rigor and competition. At either school, your GPA, MCAT prep, clinical exposure, and recommendation letters will matter far more than the school name alone. Still, Pitt often stands out because the surrounding medical infrastructure makes it easier to stack the exact experiences med schools want without having to piece them together from multiple places.

If your question is strictly which school is better for preparing for medical school, I would lean Pitt. Michigan State is a solid option, but Pitt has the more obvious pre-med ecosystem, especially for clinical access, research, and application-building support.
