Caltech can absolutely be fun, but its version of fun is narrower and more specific. A lot of student life revolves around the Houses, traditions, collaborations, and a very distinctive nerdy humor. Pasadena is pleasant and there is access to the greater LA area, but Caltech itself is quieter, smaller, and more academically consuming, so the social atmosphere depends a lot on whether you enjoy a tight, eccentric community rather than a bustling campus.

If by “fun” you mean variety, campus buzz, and more options when you want a break from academics, Carnegie Mellon is more likely to feel enjoyable on a daily basis. If your idea of fun is an intimate campus where people bond deeply over shared intensity and unusual traditions, Caltech has a real appeal, but for most students asking this exact question, CMU tends to offer the livelier four-year experience.
