Is Caltech or Northwestern considered more fun for undergrads?

Northwestern is usually seen as the more conventionally fun undergraduate experience, especially if you mean a bigger social scene, more school spirit, and a wider range of things happening on and around campus. It has easy access to Chicago, and a campus culture where performances, clubs, lakefront hangouts, and weekend events are a big part of daily life. Caltech can absolutely be fun, but its version of fun is much more niche, smaller-scale, and tied to its close-knit house culture and quirky traditions.

Northwestern tends to fit students who want social variety. Because it is larger and more outward-facing, you get more options at any given time: student theater, a cappella, sports games, Greek life, concerts, dorm and club events, and spontaneous trips into Evanston or Chicago. The vibe is often described as energetic and polished, with plenty of students who are serious academically but also very engaged in campus life beyond class.

Caltech fits students who like intense community and unusual traditions more than a broad social scene. Its houses are central to student life, and the culture can be very playful, eccentric, and collaborative. Students often talk about pranks, house dinners, themed events, and a kind of nerdy humor that would feel incredibly fun to the right person. But the campus is much smaller, the workload is famously heavy, and the social options are naturally narrower than at Northwestern.

So if by fun you mean lots of people, lots of events, and a more visibly active campus atmosphere, Northwestern has the edge for most students. If your idea of fun is being in a tiny, very smart, very quirky community where traditions feel insider-y and friendships can get tight fast, Caltech has a real appeal that some students would actually prefer.
