There are more clubs, more people to meet outside your academic lane, more school-sponsored events, and a campus atmosphere that feels closer to what most people picture as a traditional residential college. Because the undergraduate population is much larger, it is also easier to find different social scenes rather than one dominant culture.

Caltech suits students who genuinely enjoy being surrounded by people who are excited about problem sets, lab work, inside jokes, house traditions, and unusual campus events. A lot of the social life is house-based and very community-specific, so students who love tight-knit, eccentric environments often find it surprisingly fun. But the intensity is real: workloads are heavy, the student body is tiny, and the social scene is less varied and less outwardly lively than at a place like WashU.

So if by fun you mean more spontaneous options, more people, more campus programming, and a broader college atmosphere, WashU is more likely to deliver that. If your idea of fun is a close, nerdy, highly distinctive community where traditions and shared academic obsession are part of the appeal, Caltech can be a great match, just in a much less typical way.
