Which is better for New York internships: Cornell or Columbia?

Columbia has the clearer edge for New York internships because it is in Manhattan, which makes in-semester internships far easier to do in practice. You can commute to offices during the week, attend employer events without major travel, and build relationships with alumni and recruiters who are already nearby. For industries that hire heavily through networking and frequent face time, that location matters a lot.

The biggest difference is during the school year. At Columbia, students can realistically intern part time while taking classes. At Cornell, most New York internships are still available to students, but Ithaca makes regular commuting unrealistic, so those opportunities are much more likely to be limited to summers or breaks.

Employer access also looks different. Columbia students are in the same city as recruiters, alumni, and industry events, so informational interviews, coffee chats, panel events, and last-minute networking opportunities are easier to turn into something concrete. Cornell has a very strong alumni network in New York, but students usually have to be more intentional and plan around distance.

Summer outcomes are closer than people sometimes assume. Both schools are well known, both place students into New York internships, and Cornell’s reputation is strong enough that it does not shut you out of the city at all. The real advantage for Columbia is convenience and repetition: more chances to be in the room, more chances to say yes to part-time work during the semester, and less friction in turning a lead into an internship.
