University of Richmond still does well, especially because it is in Richmond and has a supportive career center, but UVA tends to provide broader and deeper internship access across more industries.

One big differentiator is employer reach. UVA draws major recruiters from Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, New York, and other large markets, so students often have access to both in-semester and summer opportunities well beyond Charlottesville. Its alumni network is also notably large and active, which matters a lot when internships come through referrals, informational interviews, and school-specific recruiting channels.

Another difference is the scale of internship pipelines tied to specific programs. At UVA, schools and departments like McIntire, Batten, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences all connect students to different kinds of employers, and the volume of recruiting tends to be higher. That matters if you are still exploring, because you are more likely to find structured paths into several fields rather than depending on a narrower local market.

Richmond’s advantage is access and attention. Because it is smaller, students can sometimes get more personalized support from faculty and career staff, and being in the state capital helps for internships in government, nonprofits, law-related offices, and regional business settings during the school year. But if the question is which school seems better connected to employers in the broadest sense, UVA is the more powerful platform.
