Is UVA or Georgetown better for government jobs after college?

Georgetown has the clearer edge for government and public policy jobs right after college. Its Washington, DC location matters a lot because students can intern during the semester at federal agencies, on Capitol Hill, think tanks, embassies, and advocacy organizations without having to wait for summer. Georgetown also has a long-established pipeline into those spaces, especially through the School of Foreign Service, government, political economy, and policy-oriented programs.

Location is the biggest differentiator. At Georgetown, students can build a resume with multiple in-semester internships while still taking classes, which is a real advantage for entry-level hiring in government and policy. Being in DC also makes networking easier in a very practical way: alumni events, panel discussions, informational interviews, and part-time policy work are simply more accessible when they happen a few Metro stops away.

The academic ecosystem also leans more directly into government careers. Georgetown is especially visible in international affairs, foreign policy, national security, public service, and politics, and employers in those fields know the school well. That does not mean UVA lacks strong outcomes, because UVA has excellent political science, public policy, and pre-law preparation, and it places graduates into government work too. But UVA students usually have to be more intentional about using summers, alumni outreach, and post-grad moves to DC, while Georgetown students are already operating inside that network.

School name matters some, but early experience matters more, and Georgetown makes that experience easier to accumulate before graduation.
