Is UIUC or Harvard more prestigious for STEM employers and grad schools?

Harvard carries more broad prestige overall, but for many STEM employers and graduate programs, especially in engineering and computer science, UIUC is viewed as at least equally strong and sometimes more directly respected. UIUC has a long-established reputation for producing large numbers of top engineers and CS graduates, and recruiters in those fields know the program well. Harvard’s name travels farther outside STEM and can open doors through general brand recognition, but that is not the whole story for technical hiring.

For internships and jobs, the biggest differentiator is field-specific recruiting. In engineering and CS, UIUC is a major target school with deep employer pipelines, large technical career fairs, and a strong alumni presence in industry. That matters because many STEM employers care less about abstract prestige and more about whether they regularly hire from a program, trust its training, and have teams full of alumni who can refer candidates.

For graduate school, research environment and faculty access matter more than headline name value. Both schools can place students very well, but UIUC has exceptional depth across technical departments and a very strong reputation among faculty in engineering, CS, physics, and related fields. Harvard is obviously respected by admissions committees everywhere, yet in some STEM areas, especially applied and engineering-heavy ones, UIUC’s academic reputation is not a step down at all and may even read as more specialized.

The practical difference is that Harvard gives you wider cross-industry name recognition, while UIUC often carries equal or stronger weight in the rooms that matter most for technical evaluation. In STEM, people usually know the distinction between overall institutional prestige and program prestige, and UIUC benefits a lot from that.
