UT Austin vs University of Washington: which campus has better weather for students who prefer milder climates?

The biggest practical tradeoff is heat and sun at UT Austin versus cool, gray, drizzly conditions at the University of Washington. Day to day, Austin usually means much hotter afternoons for a big part of the school year, while Seattle usually means more overcast skies, light rain, and fewer temperature extremes. For someone who truly wants a milder feel, UW is usually closer to that, but only if you are comfortable with long stretches of cloudier weather.

On UT Austin’s campus, late summer and early fall can feel intensely hot when students are walking across campus, waiting for buses, or going between classes in the afternoon. Even outside the hottest months, Austin often stays warm, and sunny days are common. Winters are relatively mild, but the overall pattern is that heat is a regular part of campus life much more than cold.

At UW, campus life is usually more comfortable in terms of temperature. Seattle rarely gets the kind of sustained heat Austin does, so walking to class is often easier physically. The catch is that a lot of the academic year comes with gray skies, damp air, and light rain, especially from fall through spring, so students often get used to jackets, waterproof shoes, and not expecting bright weather every day.

If by milder you mean fewer temperature extremes and more comfortable walking weather, UW has the edge. If you mean you want sunshine and dislike drizzle more than heat, UT Austin may feel better despite being much hotter overall.
