How does the campus size of UT Austin compare with UIUC?

Despite its smaller footprint, UT Austin can feel intensely urban and busy because it sits directly next to downtown Austin. UIUC has more open space, longer walks between some academic areas, and a more traditional college-town layout.

UT Austin tends to suit students who want a compact, walkable core with city energy immediately outside campus. Many central academic buildings, the library areas, and major student spaces are close together, although the campus is dense, hilly in places, and can feel crowded between classes. West Campus, where many students live, is adjacent to campus, so daily life often blends into the surrounding Austin neighborhood.

UIUC may appeal more to students who like a campus that feels self-contained and expansive. The Quad anchors the center, but engineering, business, agriculture, research facilities, residence halls, and athletic areas extend across a broad area. Students commonly use buses, bikes, or scooters in addition to walking, particularly when traveling from one end of campus to the other. The flat terrain and wide streets make it easier to navigate, but it can feel more spread out and less city-integrated than UT Austin.
