Tufts or UCLA: which is better for city life as a college student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UCLA gives you direct access to a major city with city-scale entertainment, neighborhoods, and weather, while Tufts gives you easier access to a college-centered area near Boston but a less immersive big-city feel day to day. UCLA is in Westwood, part of Los Angeles, so students are already living inside a huge urban region. Tufts is in Medford/Somerville, with Boston accessible, but the campus itself feels more separate and residential.

If what you mean by “city life” is that you want the energy of being surrounded by a massive metro area, UCLA has the edge. Los Angeles offers endless off-campus options, from concerts and museums to beaches, food scenes, internships, and different neighborhoods with distinct personalities. Westwood itself is walkable and student-friendly, though LA can also feel spread out, and getting around often depends on time, traffic, and planning.

Tufts gives a different version of city access. The immediate area around campus has a classic student-neighborhood feel, especially with nearby Somerville and Cambridge, and Boston is close enough for regular outings. In practice, though, many students still experience Tufts as a campus-first school with city trips layered on top, rather than a place where the city defines daily life the way it can at UCLA.

For ease of getting off campus, Tufts may actually feel simpler in some ways because the Boston-area transit setup makes spontaneous trips more manageable than navigating LA traffic. But for bigger city energy as part of everyday student life, UCLA usually feels more plugged into a major urban environment. Between the two, UCLA is probably the better match for the kind of city experience you’re describing.
