Its campus runs right along Commonwealth Avenue in the city itself, the Green Line cuts through campus, and students are constantly moving between classes, neighborhoods, restaurants, internships, and events without needing to “go into Boston” as a separate trip. Tufts gives you access to Boston, but it feels more like a residential college campus in Medford and Somerville that happens to be near the city.

BU is the stronger match for someone who wants Boston to be part of the routine. You can walk out of class and already be in an urban environment, with city blocks, public transit, shops, and a steady flow of non-student life all around you. That changes the feel a lot: the city is not an occasional destination, it is the backdrop of college.

Tufts fits students who want easier access to Boston without living in the middle of it all. The campus has more of a contained, traditional college feel, with a hilltop layout and a clearer separation between campus life and city life. You can get into Boston by T or car, and being near Davis Square and Somerville is a real plus, but most students still experience Boston as somewhere they head to rather than somewhere they are immersed in every day.

Tufts often appeals more to students who like having urban options nearby while still coming back to a campus that feels quieter and more distinct from the city around it.
