Is MIT worth the extra cost compared with Georgia Tech for engineering?
I’m trying to decide between MIT and Georgia Tech, and MIT would cost my family noticeably more. I’m interested in engineering and want to understand whether the extra money usually feels worth it in terms of education, opportunities, and long-term value.

The real tradeoff is not engineering quality versus non-quality, because both MIT and Georgia Tech are outstanding for engineering. But for mainstream engineering careers, Georgia Tech is already a top destination for recruiters, so the gap is often smaller in practice than people assume.
For long-term value, I would be cautious about paying substantially more for MIT if that means meaningful loans, family financial strain, or sacrificing flexibility after college. Engineering salaries are strong, but debt still limits choices, especially if you may want graduate school, a startup, public-interest tech work, or a lower-paying first role. If the extra cost is manageable without major stress, MIT can absolutely be worth it because of the density of talent, research access, and network. If the extra cost is significant, Georgia Tech is one of the few schools where turning down MIT can be a very rational decision and not much of a compromise at all.
