Which is better for finance careers: UVA or Pepperdine?

The biggest practical tradeoff is recruiting reach versus environment: UVA gives you a much deeper, more established pipeline into finance, while Pepperdine offers a smaller, more personal setting in a strong location but with less consistent access to major finance recruiting. For internships and first jobs, that difference matters a lot because finance hiring is heavily driven by on-campus recruiting, alumni pull, and how many firms regularly return to campus. UVA’s McIntire School of Commerce is especially well known among employers, and the broader UVA alumni network is substantially stronger in high-finance circles.

If your goal includes investment banking, sales and trading, asset management, or other highly competitive finance paths, UVA is the clearer choice. It has much more structured recruiting, stronger brand recognition on the East Coast and in major financial hubs, and a larger base of alumni already working in those roles. Even outside McIntire, UVA students benefit from clubs, prep resources, and a campus culture where finance recruiting is a familiar path.

Pepperdine can still work for finance, especially if you are aiming at wealth management, commercial banking, corporate finance, real estate-related roles, or regional opportunities in Southern California. Its Malibu and LA proximity can help with networking and internships during the school year, which is a real advantage. But the key issue is scale: fewer firms recruit there in a systematic way, and students often need to be more self-directed to build the same level of access that comes more naturally at UVA.

School name matters in finance mostly because it affects who shows up to recruit and how quickly alumni respond. On that front, UVA carries more weight. Between these two, UVA would give you the stronger path for finance careers in both recruiting access and long-term network value.
