Notre Dame vs UC Berkeley for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus structure. UC Berkeley offers a deeper and more famous CS ecosystem, with more course breadth, research activity, startup energy, and direct recruiting from major tech companies, but it is also much larger and can feel more competitive and less personalized. Notre Dame gives you a smaller, more guided undergraduate experience with easier faculty access and a tighter campus community, but it does not match Berkeley’s sheer CS depth or Bay Area proximity.

For internships and early career outcomes, Berkeley has a real edge. Being in the Bay Area matters, and Berkeley students benefit from employer presence, a large alumni network in tech, and a department that is well known in both industry and academia. If your priority is maximizing exposure to top-tier CS coursework, research labs, startups, and recruiting pipelines, Berkeley is hard to beat.

For the undergrad experience specifically, Notre Dame is more appealing to many students who want a classic residential campus, strong advising, and a less overwhelming environment. You are more likely to get a closer-knit feel, and for some students that leads to better mentorship and less stress. Notre Dame can absolutely place students into strong jobs and graduate programs, but you may need to be a bit more proactive in building the same kind of tech network that Berkeley offers more naturally.

For grad school preparation, Berkeley again has the advantage because of its research volume, advanced coursework, and overall CS reputation. That said, a motivated Notre Dame student can still become a strong grad school candidate through research, strong grades, and faculty relationships, and the smaller setting may make those faculty connections easier to build.

If the question is which school is better for undergraduate CS in the broadest sense, Berkeley is the stronger choice. I would lean Notre Dame only if you know you will thrive much better in a smaller, more personal environment and you value that enough to trade away some of Berkeley’s exceptional CS-specific advantages.
