Notre Dame vs Stanford for computer science: which is the better choice?

Stanford is the stronger choice for computer science. Its CS department has much broader depth across major subfields, it sits at the center of Silicon Valley recruiting, and undergraduates benefit from unusually direct access to startups, major tech firms, and research labs that shape the field.

Academically, Stanford offers a more expansive CS ecosystem. You will find stronger coverage in areas like AI, systems, theory, human-computer interaction, and entrepreneurship tied closely to computing, plus a larger concentration of faculty and research activity that undergrads can plug into. Notre Dame has a respectable computing program and a solid teaching environment, but it does not match Stanford’s scale, specialization, or influence in computer science.

For recruiting, Stanford has a clear edge because companies recruit there aggressively and constantly, both for internships and full-time roles. The school’s location matters a lot here: being in the Bay Area makes it easier to attend events, meet founders and engineers, and access opportunities during the school year rather than only in summer. Notre Dame places students into tech as well, but its recruiting network is less saturated with top-tier CS employers and startup connections.

Opportunities outside the classroom are also very different. At Stanford, CS is deeply embedded in the campus culture, and that creates momentum around hackathons, labs, incubators, cross-disciplinary projects, and student ventures. Notre Dame offers a more traditional campus experience with strong community and undergraduate attention, which some students value highly, but for pure computer science upside, Stanford is operating on another level.

That said, Notre Dame can still be a compelling option if you care a lot about a close-knit undergraduate environment, Catholic identity, and a campus culture that feels more contained and traditional.
