University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs Rutgers for accounting careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?

The biggest practical tradeoff is national accounting recruiting strength versus East Coast location access. UIUC’s accounting program has a particularly strong reputation with major accounting firms and corporate employers. Rutgers gives you a real geographic advantage for internships during the school year because of its proximity to New York City, North Jersey, and Philadelphia employers.

For pure employer perception in accounting, UIUC has the edge. Its Gies College of Business, especially accounting, is very well known among recruiters, and the campus has a deep, established pipeline into public accounting. That matters for both internships and full-time offers because firms already know the curriculum and regularly hire there.

Rutgers is still a solid option, especially if you want to build your career in the Northeast. Being closer to dense employer markets can make networking, part-time work, and semester internships easier to manage. If your goal is to stay in New Jersey or NYC long term, Rutgers can convert location into opportunity in a practical way.

That said, when students ask specifically about accounting recruiting power rather than convenience, UIUC is usually the more compelling choice. It tends to carry stronger name recognition in accounting circles nationally, and its on-campus recruiting ecosystem is especially robust for public accounting.

Rutgers becomes more attractive when cost is significantly lower for you or when you are firmly committed to the Northeast and want easier access to that market while in school. But on recruiting reputation and pipeline alone, I would pick UIUC for accounting careers.
