Is Columbia or UIUC better for accessing New York City internships?

Columbia offers substantially more direct access to New York City internships because its Morningside Heights campus is in Manhattan, students can intern during the academic year, and many NYC employers recruit on or near campus. UIUC students can certainly reach New York opportunities, especially in technical fields, but they usually pursue them through summer programs, virtual recruiting, or travel rather than fitting an internship into a normal semester.

At Columbia, firms in finance, consulting, media, publishing, nonprofits, tech, healthcare, and startups are accessible by subway. That proximity matters: students can attend employer events, conduct informational interviews, and work part-time internships during fall or spring without relocating. Columbia’s alumni presence is also especially concentrated in New York, which can make networking more practical and frequent.

UIUC has a strong national reputation and deep employer connections, particularly for computer science, engineering, data, business, and quantitative roles. Its large career fairs and established recruiting pipelines can lead to NYC summer internships at major companies, and its alumni network extends into the city. However, Urbana-Champaign is far from New York, so most in-person NYC networking requires advance planning, travel, or a summer stay.
