Is UIUC or RPI better for undergraduate research opportunities?

The main tradeoff is scale versus ease of access: UIUC offers a much larger engineering research ecosystem and more specialized labs, while RPI’s smaller campus can make it easier to build direct relationships with professors early. UIUC is especially deep in areas such as computer science, electrical and computer engineering, materials, mechanical engineering, aerospace, and bioengineering. RPI has substantial engineering research as well, with a more intimate departmental feel and less distance between undergraduates and faculty.

At UIUC, an undergraduate can find research in nearly any technical niche, including work connected to major institutes, federal grants, industry collaborations, and the Research Park. The Office of Undergraduate Research, department communications, course-based projects, and direct faculty outreach all provide entry points. The challenge is that popular labs, particularly in CS and ECE, can be competitive, so students often need to contact several faculty members and show relevant coursework or skills before landing a position.

RPI’s undergraduate research environment can be more personally navigable. Students may have an easier time meeting faculty, discussing their interests, and joining a lab through a professor or department contact rather than competing within a very large applicant pool. First-year students at either school can get involved, but the most realistic routes are structured first-year research experiences, course-related projects, and volunteering or assisting in a lab before moving into more independent work.

For a student aiming at graduate school, UIUC has the edge in breadth, research infrastructure, and access to highly specialized projects. RPI can be the better setting for someone who values close faculty mentorship and wants to become a recognizable, sustained contributor in a smaller engineering community.
