UVA or Tulane for finance careers?
I’m trying to decide between UVA and Tulane and I’m interested in finance after college. Both schools seem like they could lead to good opportunities, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one has the stronger path into finance.
I want to choose the school that would give me the best overall preparation and recruiting options for a finance career.

For finance, UVA usually offers the stronger overall platform. McIntire has a very established reputation in business and finance, alumni presence is deep in major markets like New York, and recruiting is broader and more structured across investment banking, asset management, consulting, and corporate finance. Tulane can absolutely lead to strong outcomes too, but the path is more selective and often depends more on how aggressively you network and position yourself.
UVA makes the most sense for the student who wants the widest set of finance options and a campus culture where business recruiting is highly visible. If you are aiming at competitive fields like investment banking or high-level buy-side roles, UVA tends to give you more built-in access through employer relationships, student organizations, and a large alumni base that is already well represented on Wall Street. It is also a place where being surrounded by many students targeting similar careers can push you and help you learn the recruiting process early.
Tulane fits better for a student who likes a more distinctive, less traditional campus environment and is willing to be especially proactive. It has strong regional connections, a respected business school, and some solid finance placement, particularly for students who stand out academically and network consistently. New Orleans also gives Tulane a different feel socially and culturally, which matters if you know you would thrive there. For some students, that environment leads to better performance and better outcomes even if the finance pipeline is not as deep as UVA’s.
If your priority is the strongest combination of preparation, alumni reach, and recruiting volume in finance, UVA has the clearer edge. Tulane becomes more compelling if you strongly prefer its campus experience and are comfortable creating more of your own momentum in the recruiting process.
