Is UVA or Colgate more fun for an undergraduate student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and setting: UVA offers a much larger, more active social scene in a true college town, while Colgate gives you a smaller, tighter-knit campus with fewer options but often stronger day-to-day community. At UVA, there is more happening at any given time, including student organizations, athletic events, parties, performances, and off-campus activity in Charlottesville. At Colgate, social life is more campus-centered and more intimate, with students often knowing each other well and spending a lot of time in the same shared spaces.

If by “fun” you mean lively, varied, and energetic, UVA usually has the edge. Charlottesville adds a lot to undergraduate life because students are not limited to campus for food, music, coffee shops, and weekend plans. UVA also has the atmosphere of a big school with major sports spirit, many traditions, and enough people that different social scenes can coexist.

Colgate can absolutely be fun, but it is a different kind of fun. Hamilton is much smaller and more isolated, so the campus itself carries more of the social load. That often creates a strong residential culture where people show up for school events, know their classmates well, and feel very connected, but it can also feel repetitive if you want constant variety or a busier off-campus environment.

Students at both schools often seem to enjoy being there, but the mood is different. UVA tends to feel more bustling and outward-facing, while Colgate feels more enclosed and communal.
