UVA vs. Georgetown: Which University Has Smaller Undergraduate Class Sizes?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale: UVA is a much larger public university, so introductory courses and popular majors are more likely to include sizable lectures, while Georgetown’s smaller undergraduate population creates a more consistently seminar-oriented feel. At UVA, small classes are readily available, but students typically encounter them more reliably after the first year or in upper-level courses.

UVA’s size also brings a broader course catalog, more large-school energy, and many options for finding smaller academic communities through honors programs, departmental seminars, and professor-led electives. In majors such as economics, psychology, biology, and computer science, however, early required courses can be large. Discussion sections, labs, and office hours can make those courses feel more personal, but they are not the same as a small primary class.

Georgetown’s undergraduate-focused schools and smaller overall enrollment tend to make faculty interaction and classroom discussion a more routine part of the experience from the beginning. Some gateway courses can still be lectures, particularly in business, science, and economics, but the baseline classroom environment is typically more intimate than UVA’s.

For a student whose top priority is having smaller, discussion-based undergraduate classes as the default rather than something to seek out strategically, Georgetown is the clearer choice. UVA can still provide an excellent small-class experience, particularly in later years, but Georgetown is more likely to deliver it consistently across the undergraduate experience.
