Which is better for engineering: WashU or UC Berkeley?

UC Berkeley is more widely regarded as the stronger engineering school overall. Its College of Engineering has a larger national and global reputation in engineering, deeper ties to major tech and research sectors, and broader visibility across many engineering disciplines. WashU is a very good university, but engineering is not the area where it is most commonly seen as a top-tier national powerhouse.

One major difference is scale and depth. Berkeley Engineering has a much bigger engineering footprint, with especially strong recognition in fields like electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and bioengineering. That larger ecosystem usually means more specialized labs, more course variety, and more established recruiting pipelines for engineering students.

Another differentiator is industry location and access. Berkeley benefits from being in the Bay Area, which gives students unusually strong exposure to tech companies, startups, research partnerships, and engineering internships during the school year. For many students, that proximity translates into easier networking and more frequent contact with employers in engineering-heavy industries.

Research reputation also tilts toward Berkeley. It is known for high-output engineering research and for being a place where undergraduates can be surrounded by major projects, graduate programs, and faculty with strong standing in their fields. WashU offers excellent academics and can provide a more personal environment, but in pure engineering reputation and breadth, Berkeley has the clearer edge.

The one caveat is student experience. WashU may offer smaller classes, more individual attention, and a less intense atmosphere, which some students prefer.
