Is WashU or Cornell better for a career in hotel management?

Cornell is the much more direct fit for hotel management, particularly for operations, property leadership, and hospitality-industry recruiting. Its Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration is one of the few undergraduate programs built specifically around hospitality, with coursework in hotel operations, food and beverage, real estate, revenue management, finance, and service leadership. Cornell also has the Statler Hotel on campus, giving students unusually close exposure to a working hotel environment, and its hospitality alumni network is exceptionally deep across major hotel brands, ownership groups, and consulting firms.

A student who already knows they want to work in hotels would likely find Cornell’s recruiting structure especially valuable. Hotel companies regularly recruit Hotel School students for internships and post-graduate management, operations, and corporate roles, while student organizations, faculty connections, and the school’s industry events make networking part of the academic experience. The program can also support a path beyond day-to-day operations into hotel development, asset management, brand strategy, or luxury hospitality.

WashU makes more sense for a student who wants a broader business or liberal-arts education and is still uncertain about committing to hospitality. Through Olin Business School or related coursework, a student could build strong foundations in management, marketing, finance, and entrepreneurship, then pursue hospitality internships independently. But WashU does not offer the same dedicated hotel-management curriculum, on-campus hotel training setting, or concentrated hospitality recruiting pipeline as Cornell.

WashU could be a sound choice when its broader academic environment, another intended field, or a significant personal factor outweighs the advantage of Cornell’s specialized hospitality ecosystem.
