Is UC Berkeley or NYU more fun for an undergraduate student?

UC Berkeley is usually more fun in the traditional undergraduate sense. It has a real campus, a concentrated student community in and around Berkeley, major school spirit tied to Cal athletics, and a social scene where undergrads are more likely to run into each other at the same events, neighborhoods, and weekend spots.

One big difference is campus life itself. Berkeley has a classic college environment with residence halls, student sections at games, club culture, nearby house gatherings, and a surrounding college town that revolves heavily around students. NYU has plenty to do, but its campus is spread through Manhattan, so student life can feel more fragmented and less like everyone is sharing the same place.

Weekend activity also feels different. At Berkeley, a lot of social life is school-centered: hanging out in the same few neighborhoods, going to campus events, taking trips around the Bay, and doing things that feel distinctly tied to being a Cal student. At NYU, the fun often comes from New York itself, which is exciting but also less built around undergraduates, more expensive, and sometimes more individual than communal.

Student vibe is another separator. Berkeley students are often intense academically, but there is still a visible campus identity and a stronger sense that undergrads are part of one shared scene. NYU can be energizing and culturally rich, especially for students who love city life, but some undergrads find it less cohesive socially because people disperse across the city and build very different routines.
