Is UC Berkeley or Texas A&M more rigorous academically?

I’m trying to compare the overall academic rigor between UC Berkeley and Texas A&M as a prospective student. I know both are strong schools, but I’m mainly wondering which one is generally considered more intense in terms of coursework, grading, and academic pressure.

I’m not asking about prestige, just which environment tends to feel more demanding for students.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UC Berkeley tends to have a more intense, high-pressure academic culture across many departments, while Texas A&M is demanding but often feels more structured and a bit less cutthroat day to day. Berkeley is especially known for large foundational classes, fast pacing, tough grading in many STEM fields, and a student culture where many classmates were top performers in high school. Texas A&M absolutely has rigorous programs, especially in engineering and science, but the overall environment is usually described as more manageable and more supportive in tone.

If your question is simply which school is more rigorous academically in the broadest sense, Berkeley is more often seen that way. That reputation comes from both the curriculum and the atmosphere around it. Students at Berkeley often talk about heavier conceptual difficulty, stronger competition for top grades, and more pressure in impacted majors.

At Texas A&M, rigor can still be very real, particularly in engineering, where the first-year path and progression requirements can be stressful. But A&M’s academic experience is often more predictable in structure, and many students find the campus culture less academically intense than Berkeley’s. That does not mean easy, just usually less relentlessly pressured.

Grading also matters here. Berkeley has a stronger reputation for difficult curves, hard exams, and classes where earning an A can feel especially challenging. At A&M, tough grading exists too, but the school as a whole is less commonly associated with the kind of constant academic strain that Berkeley is known for.

So if you are comparing overall academic intensity, coursework pressure, and how demanding school tends to feel, UC Berkeley comes out ahead as the more rigorous environment. Texas A&M can still be very challenging, especially in certain majors, but Berkeley is the school more students would describe as academically intense across the board.
