Is UC Berkeley or Northwestern generally considered more fun for undergrads?

Most students would describe Northwestern as the more consistently social and campus-centered place for undergrads, while Berkeley often feels more independent, city-driven, and self-directed. Northwestern has a traditional residential campus on Lake Michigan, Big Ten sports, and a stronger sense that students are spending weekends and evenings in the same orbit. Berkeley absolutely has a lot going on, but the fun there is usually less packaged by the school and more something you build for yourself through friends, clubs, the Bay Area, and the surrounding city.

Northwestern tends to fit the student who wants an energetic undergraduate scene that is easy to plug into. The quarter system keeps things busy, but students often talk about school spirit, performances, lakefront hangouts, student org events, and a social life that feels concentrated on or very near campus. Because Evanston is calmer and more contained than Berkeley, the social scene often revolves around the university itself, which can make it feel more cohesive and accessible.

Berkeley fits the student who thinks fun means variety, independence, and a little chaos. There is a huge student population, a very active club culture, political and cultural events, concerts, food, and quick access to Oakland and San Francisco. The tradeoff is that Berkeley can feel more decentralized and less socially unified. Some students love that freedom and find it exciting; others feel like they have to work harder to find their people and their version of fun.

So if by fun you mean a more visibly social, spirited, and undergraduate-centered atmosphere, Northwestern usually gets that label more often. If your idea of fun is being in a vibrant, intense environment with endless things happening on and off campus, Berkeley can be more exciting, but it is rarely described as effortless.
